Triaging Outreach With Student Activity Data: A Conversation With Beth Moeller

Written by Amanda Bryant | Jul 13, 2026 9:12:04 PM

Beth Moeller, Assistant Dean of Career Services at UCLA School of Law, knows that one of the biggest challenges in career services isn’t simply helping students, it’s knowing who needs help before they ask for it.

As recruiting timelines continue shifting earlier and students navigate more decentralized recruiting processes, career services teams are balancing an incredible amount of information across applications, networking, interviews, events, and advising conversations. Beth Moeller and her team at UCLA have approached that challenge thoughtfully, using Flo Forward to create more visibility into student engagement while allowing advisors to deliver more personalized support where it matters most.

Throughout our recent webinar, Beth shared several ways UCLA is using Flo Forward to better understand student recruiting behavior, streamline employer research, and create more meaningful advising conversations.

Using Student Activity Data to Deliver More Personalized Support

One of the most impactful ways Beth’s team uses Flo Forward is through student activity visibility.

Rather than simply viewing recruiting data as a reporting tool, UCLA uses it to better understand where students may need additional support throughout the recruiting cycle.

Beth described several different student engagement patterns her office watches for:

  • students who may feel overwhelmed and have not yet started applying
  • students who are highly active but less communicative with the office
  • students who are securing interviews but may need additional support converting those opportunities into offers

Each scenario requires a very different advising approach.

“Who hasn’t applied but expressed an interest in big law and the private sector, and we don’t see them there at all? In that case, they may be really behind and overwhelmed, so we need to reach out and help them get up to speed.”

Beth also shared how helpful it is to identify students who are interviewing frequently but may benefit from additional preparation and coaching.

“Those who are getting the interviews but are not closing the deal, it helps us reach out to them in a tailored way and find out, ‘Have you done a mock interview? Why don’t you come in? We need to work with you.’”

That level of visibility allows UCLA’s career services team to spend less time trying to piece together recruiting activity and more time focused on meaningful student support.

As Flo Forward continues expanding application tracking capabilities, including allowing students to add opportunities outside the Flo network, schools like UCLA are gaining an even more complete picture of how students are navigating the recruiting process.

Helping Students Research Firms More Strategically

Beth also highlighted how valuable Flo Forward’s Firm Profiles have become, particularly for students exploring opportunities outside of Southern California.

“The firm profiles have been extremely helpful, especially for our students who are looking out of town. If we don’t have those employers coming to our Meet the Firms events and they’re not meeting them, it can be a great way for them to dive in and see that information.”

Flo Forward’s Firm Profiles provide students with access to detailed information about law firms, including:

  • summer program structure
  • office-specific hiring information
  • practice area details
  • rotational versus assigned programs
  • summer associate class sizes
  • compensation information

For career services teams, that centralized information has also reduced a significant amount of manual data collection work that offices traditionally handled themselves.

“This has helped complement our communications with firms and tracking everything on our own so it’s freed up more time for us to work with students.”

That operational efficiency creates more space for what matters most: advising, mentorship, and helping students navigate increasingly complex recruiting decisions.

Simplifying Event Discovery for Students

Another resource Beth discussed was Flo Forward’s Event Board, which has become especially useful for helping students discover networking and recruiting opportunities more independently.

For students researching markets outside their home region, centralized event visibility can make a significant difference. Rather than relying on scattered outreach or word-of-mouth, students can proactively explore employer programming, networking events, and recruiting opportunities directly within Flo Forward.

Why UCLA Continues Investing in Flo Forward Training

One of Beth’s strongest recommendations during the webinar centered around Flo Forward student training sessions.

At UCLA, the Flo team partners directly with students to walk through best practices, recruiting strategy, and how to use Flo Forward effectively throughout the recruiting process.

“It was really helpful for our students to hear from the Flo Forward experts themselves and learn about what they can use on Flo Forward and what some of the best practices are. We’ll be doing the same thing this coming year.”

Beth also acknowledged something many career services professionals understand well: sometimes students absorb information differently when it comes directly from platform specialists.

“It’s always nice for them to hear from somebody in addition to career services, including somebody who’s an expert in the Flo Forward platform..”

Flo Forward training sessions are available free to partner schools and can be tailored to each school’s recruiting strategy, student timeline, and advising priorities.

Staying Ahead of a Recruiting Landscape That Keeps Evolving

Throughout the conversation, Beth repeatedly returned to one central theme: the recruiting cycle continues moving faster every year.

“Things are moving so fast with this recruiting cycle, and we expect that to only continue.”

What stood out most during Beth’s discussion was not simply how UCLA is using Flo Forward’s resources, but how intentionally her team is applying them to create more thoughtful, proactive advising experiences for students.

By combining student activity visibility, centralized employer research, event discovery, and tailored training, UCLA has built a system that allows advisors to spend less time managing administrative complexity and more time helping students succeed.

As recruiting timelines continue evolving, that kind of visibility and flexibility is becoming increasingly important for career services teams everywhere.
